Some weeks ago I thought about the fact that, lately, many signs of the passing of time have been simultaneously manifesting themselves in me. And then one of my flatmates loaned me “Journal of a body” (“Journal d’un corps), the journal of a man who kept an account of the changes he experimented in his body, from when he was twelve until his death. It wasn’t an intimate and traditional journal of events, feelings or dramas; the idea was to document how his body was changing and how he reacted. However, the author does acknowledge a link between life and the way the body handles it. The book is magnificent and extremely poignant. It made me wonder how my parents are living their maturity and I remembered how my grandparents’ bodies betrayed them in the end. According to the book the signs of aging start really early, from age 40. And they last a long time, to the point where you are old way longer than the time you were young. His testimonial is not very encouraging.

The author writes that he would love to read the journal of the body of a woman and it’s true that there is a lot to say about that. But I enjoyed learning the point of view of a man because it’s what I know the less about and it’s what I have cared the least. I must confess that I’ve never felt any particular interest for the male gender. Maybe because their bodies seem to be of hardly any mystery. They don’t experience any hidden processes they can’t control (well yes, one, but it doesn’t seem extraordinary), their cycles are not connected to the stars, they are incapable of creating life. Moreover, the distance between their emotions and the way they express them is more direct, at least when it comes to aggressiveness, something I find very hard to show. But I think I don’t care about them because they seem to me to be overly privileged by the world, by society, because they think they are invincible since they are not condemned to change their lives in order to give birth and take care of children, since they are stronger and don’t hesitate to abuse of that strength.

I always wanted to understand what it means to be a woman, from a social point of view. My role models have always been women, I dream of having a girl, I have a tendency to read and listen to music from women more than from men. It’s a miracle I’m not a lesbian. But when it comes to my body I have always taken it for granted and I’ve endured it more than wanted to understand it, even less document it.

Lately I’ve been thinking about it because it’s starting to act differently and it has forced me to change my daily life. Like with the fact that since two years I’ve started to wear a plastic retainer for my teeth when I sleep. When I came back to Honduras in 2012 the dentist had it made because apparently I clench my jaw at night and my teeth have marks like they are going to break, eventually. This is supposed to be a sign of stress. At first I didn’t want to wear it, but in Switzerland there were certain mornings when I woke up with a huge headache. Since I started wearing the retainer every night and started meditating in the mornings the headaches are gone.

I try to exercise regularly mainly because I spend all my days sitting down and not because I care about being thin. I’ve been going to the aerobics class in my university and there is one teacher that never gets too many students. I didn’t understand why until I went to one of her classes. She is a mature lady and the exercises she practices seem to have had their moment of glory in the 1980s, as well as the music she chooses for the class. She makes us do weird movements, like for example running backwards with our hands on our knees. Nothing is particularly demanding, you don’t sweat a lot and you wonder in the end if you didn’t waste your time. But the morning after I always wake up with horrible pains everywhere. Two weeks ago I couldn’t even climb down stairs because of the pain in my legs.

Switzerland has unleashed a proliferation of grey hairs in my head. I used to have an unpleasant sighting every six months, but now it has become a permanent colony. They work as a group and they force me to constantly change the way I wear my hair.

But of all the things, the worse has been to wear orthopedic soles. A few years ago I started wearing out the heels in my shoes in a very strange way. I went to a podiatrist in Honduras who told me I had nothing, but gave me a pair of heels I had to wear when I had to walk a lot. Obviously that never happens so I never wore them. But something must be getting worse because this past year I had to take all my favorite shoes to the cobbler. I’m resigning myself to wear the soles.

And these are the marks in the body, but there are other things like going to a party one night and the fact that the hangover lasts one entire day. Or if I go to sleep late I am totally useless the next day.

I’m 29 years old damn it, my body cannot start to disintegrate so early. Not when I haven’t attained any of the privileges that supposedly come with age. But I have to pay more attention to it because my flatmate is ten years younger than me and I barely remember what it was to be her age. I don’t want to forget how I feel now, what I’m currently living.
